Watson Elected President of the International Academy for Quality

Houston, Texas – 3 May 2008:

Gregory H. Watson was elected as President of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ) for the term 2009-2011.  Mr. Watson is a Past-president and Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and recipient of the ASQ E. Jack Lancaster Medal for service to the international quality community and also the ASQ Philip B. Crosby and IAQ Walter E. Masing Medals for his books on quality topics.  His 1993 book Strategic Benchmarking (Wiley, 1993) was selected by Fortune Magazine as a Book-of-the-Month and Library Journal named it as one of the twelve best business books of the year.

The IAQ was founded in 1966 by a consortium of national quality organizations from Europe, Japan and the United States.  Its founders were Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa, Dr. Armand V. Feigenbaum, and Dr. Walter E. Masing.  The IAQ is an independent, self-supported, not-for-profit, non-governmental, professional organization.  It is composed of members who have been nominated by their peers in recognition of their personal global prominence as well as their professional or academic contributions to quality in either management or technical fields.  IAQ is the world’s premier quality organization and it provides the most distinguished global forum for discourse on quality-related matters.  The Academy serves both regional and national quality organizations of the world by providing leadership advice and support for promotion of quality-related programs.

Mr. Watson was elected an Academician in 1996 and has previously served the Academy in a number of roles including Secretary-Treasurer, and Vice President.  He has edited three anthologies of papers by members of the Academy and has been active in its project for improving the quality of corporate governance. 

Mr. Watson has also been elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa (academic honor society), Tau Beta Pi (engineering honor society), Sigma Xi (research honor society), Alpha Pi Mu (industrial engineering honor society) as well as the World Academy of Productivity Science, and the International Statistical Institute. 

Mr. Watson is the Chairman of Business Excellence Solutions, Ltd., a management consulting firm headquartered in Espoo, Finland which specializes in the application of industrial engineering, statistical analysis, and quality management practices to improve strategic and operational performance of client organizations.
